Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Definition : Autistic Spectrum Disorders are characterised by the “triad of impairments” which are:
- impaired social functioning – impaired, atypical or delayed development of social functioning
- impaired language and/or communication development, both verbal and non-verbal
- rigidity of thought and behaviour – ranging from ritualistic behaviour and over reliance on routine to extreme delay or absence of pretend play.
Purpose : This item will record whether a person has been diagnosed as having an autistic spectrum disorder.
It will show the current number of people in Scotland, known to services that have an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). This will assist with service planning and potentially with epidemiological research.
Recording Guidance : Only record under this category where a person had received a formal medical diagnosis.

Classical Autism
Defined by the presence of abnormal or impaired development in all three areas of the triad of impairments with onset occurring prior to three years of age, irrespective of when diagnosis was confirmed. |

Asperger’s Syndrome
As with other types of autism, the same difficulties with social interaction and repetitive or rigid behaviours are present. There are however no significant delays in spoken or receptive language development or in cognitive development. |
